One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism

This meditation is based on a passage for January 17, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Ephesians 4:1-16

Reflection and Question: Paul’s wonderful capturing here of the binding together of unity and diversity in the body of Christ, the church, reminds me of Libby’s Story, one of the videos offered by More Light Presbyterians to facilitate conversation in this season of voting on Amendment 10-A. In it is a photo of a lovely stone baptismal font with the words, “One Baptism,” etched upon the lip of the bowl. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender believers are fully part of the one body of Christ, the church, and embracing that will promote “the body’s growth in building itself up in love” that Paul speaks of here. How are you maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace?

Prayer: Blessed Spirit, grant to us the humility, gentleness and patience we need in order to bear with one another in love. You grace each of us with unique gifts and You also bind us together in the one body of Christ, the church. Build us up in love. Amen.
